She’s back!

For almost ten years Viktorija’s been hopscotching back and forth from her Paris home to make music with her Stateside musicians. Once again, she’ll entertain us with her song stylings as only she can do.

“An amazing singer, smart and sophisticated beyond her years, she bears comparison with the greats. Her voice is spontaneous, intimate, sensual and fun. She’s got great phrasing, impeccable timing; and she hits every note on the button. She loves the classic American songbook, and sings it as though the 1950’s had never come and gone – she’s a class act.” – Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival.

Photo Exhibition „No One Asked Us”

Friday, June 9 at 7 pm at Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture (6500 S Pulaski Rd, Chicago, IL 60629)

„No One Asked Us” is a collection of Anna Reich photographs considering collective memory, identity, and landscape in Lithuania. These images document the generational effects of war, occupations, and human rights infringements on various communities across the country. The work presents details of the ways in which the people and landscape have been shaped and reshaped, the way cultural symbolism and significance has been assigned, stripped, and applied anew, and the effects of prolonged change on identity and the human condition. The various generations of people included in this work are the heart of this project.

Mariupolis screening
Part of Panorama Europe 2017
Saturday, May 13, 1:30 pm
Bartos Screening Room
Presented by the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania

U.S. premiere. Featured in 2016 Berlin Film Festival/Panorama

Lithuania/Germany/France/Ukraine. Dir. Mantas Kvedaravicius, 2016, 82 mins. In Russian and Ukrainian with English subtitles. In the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, life unfolds with almost surreal normalcy while just miles away violence encroaches. Despite the ongoing Russian invasion, residents go about their daily routines: an ensemble rehearses for a dance performance; a cobbler repairs shoes and discusses religion; a man is brought into court for fishing illegally. In a place where daily bomb threats are the norm, these seemingly mundane acts take on an eerie resonance. With spare, lyrical images, director Mantas Kvedaravicius’s trenchant documentary captures the tragicomic strangeness of life in a war zone.

NY – Victor Paukstelis piano concert

November 30, 2016, 8:00 PM

Victor Paukstelis at Carnegie Hall

Wednesday, November 30 at 8 pm – 10 pm
Carnegie Hall 57 Street and 7th Avenue, NYC

Tickets available at Carnegie Hall website

The fans of classical music should expect “The Recital of Restless Paintings” to be a show of music from the baroque and romanticism eras seen throught the eyes of the talented pianist Victor Paukstelis, who is also a painter. His paintings are colourful, modern, full of expression and dinamism, and his music is enlarged by the visuals and sights that vibrate acoustically. Victor Paukstelis, the author of the project, says that the main uniting force behind two forms of art is doublessly himself and his emotions. “It would be too difficult to pin a storyline between my paintings and the music of the great composers, but I promise that ‘The Recial of Restless Paintings’ will be driven by my inner energy’, he says.

The geography of the recitals spreads across the concert venues of the USA, Germany, France, Switzerland, Sweden, the Netherlands, where Victor’s talent is highly appreciated. The famous French pianist and professor Jean Marc Luisada has described Victor as an extremely sensitive artist with extraordinarily intellectual pursuit of form, sound full of volume and space and a thoughtful performance technique. Unique interpretation of form, gentility, expressiveness, bravety are the main features of Mr. Paukstelis. He views traditional compositions through the looking glass of his artistic personality: the stage is not the place for him to offer cliche musical interpretation.

Victor was born in Vilnius, Lithuania, is a graduate of the National M. K. Čiurlionis School of Art and Balys Dvarionas Music School, he has obtained a Bachelor’s, Master’s and a Licentiate of Arts degree from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater, and has studied at Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris. He has taken lectures with Gary Graffman, Jiří Hlinka, Boris Petrushanskij, Michail Voskresenskij, Anthony di Bonaventura.

Sla307 proudly presents:

Daina Mattis Exhibition “The Present Matter” October 21 – November 27, 2016

GALLERY HOURS: Wed – Sun, 11 am – 6 pm or by appointment: 949-306-4381
OPENING RECEPTION: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21, 6 pm – 9 pm

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

On display are a selection of drawings and a sculpture depicting life-size objects. Each drawing is created from the undulating pressure of thousands of vertical and horizontal graphite lines. Discernable as tally marks, the vibrating lines form upon the surface echoing/imitating the x and y-axis of the picture plane. For Mattis, the activity of drawing is about repetition and pattern; it is a slow, habitual, calculated and multi-sensory activity. There is a constant flux of pressure, motion and overlap wherein time is materialized into line, creating a visual abacus. Transparency is a hallmark of drawing; even after the physical act has ceased, the process is visible.

Concerned with our perception of time, sight and touch Mattis purposefully constructs the subtlety of the images to present the viewer with a different experience relative to their proximity. A farsighted, passive, experience forms visible re-representations of objects. A nearsighted, active, encounter with the lines reveals process and time. Just as letters from an alphabet form sounds, Mattis is exploring the language of representation and how viewers read the marriage of process, image and concept. The drawing, Nostalgia, depicts a pre-civil war heirloom hutch composed of all vertical lines. In the same image, composed of all horizontal lines is the re-representation of an American flag that can be purchased over the Internet drawn to the exact scale of the hutch. With the overlapping graphite optically merging the forms, each drawing contains a visible presence and absence of either image, an instant obscuring and accentuating that relies on the personal and perceptual experiences of the observer to mitigate. The hatched precision of each mark defines a force of visibility yet the overall subtleness in palette is akin to the color and concept of “battleship gray,” a neutral tone typically used by warships to reduce visibility.

Giving physical shape to the exhibition are a pair of hand sewn gloves made from rice paper and thread. The paper gloves allude to drawing’s multi-dimensional possibilities; it is conventionally used as a surface to create two-dimensional images, but it can be physically altered into a third dimension, adjusting the material’s purpose. Fragile in nature, the paper as material is antithetical to the function of a glove while also relating drawing to touch, gleaning concepts from Jacques Derrida’s essays, Memoirs of the Blind in which he theorizes the act of seeing as blindness and the act of vision as touch. Elaborating on this metaphor, the glove shares the same skin yet one side turned inside out can never see the other. Although this personal blindness is inescapable, new vision/perception is created as the eye is turned inside out. Altering our perception of these senses provides a new consciousness and a unique depth to familiar objects.

A catalogue of Mattis’s recent work will be available at the exhibition. The catalogue features a notable introduction written by Peter Frank.

Please join us Friday, November 18th for an artist lecture by Daina Mattis. Mattis will discuss a brief genesis of her work and her new works on display at SLA307 and in her catalogue.

Daina Mattis (b. 1984, Los Angeles) is a Brooklyn based visual artist. Mattis earned her MFA from Syracuse University in 2011 and BFA from Laguna College of Art & Design in 2007. Recently completing an A.I. R. at The Cooper Union, Mattis has been the recipient of numerous awards and is in many private and public collections. She has exhibiting nationally and internationally and has served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Kutztown University, PA and as an Adjunct Professor at Syracuse University, NY. Autobiography and biography merge in this often shattering, sometimes absurdly funny collaboration between two polymath artists, Douglas Gordon and Jonas Mekas. Gordon’s unlikely desire to bring Mekas’s prose memoir of his first decade in exile from Lithuania and journey from post-WWII displaced persons camps to New York, where he finds his vocation as a filmmaker, yields an operatic experience of sound and image. The film—which features Mekas reading his own text in haunting, musical voice-over—attests to one extraordinary man’s experience of loss and desire to make a new life, yet also resonates as a tale of the diaspora in which tens of millions exist today.

About the exhibition „NO HOME TO GO TO”
Fleeing battle fronts and fearing persecution, thousands of civilians continue to seek asylum in neighboring countries. Families, many with small children, seek safety and a better life. They languish in makeshift communities where food and accommodations are minimal and relief is hard to come by. Their plight is creating an unprecedented humanitarian crisis.
The above description appears to capture what is happening in today’s world. Yet these words describe what occurred more than seventy years ago, when displaced persons in Europe fled their homes and uprooted their lives in the last year of World War II, because of the approaching Soviet forces.
„No Home To Go To: Baltic Displaced Persons, 1944-1952” documents this earlier refugee crisis through the memories, documents, photographs, and memorabilia of families and individuals who lived through the experience of fleeing their homeland, living in displaced persons camps, and, finally, finding a new home in a new land. Wherever it is presented, the exhibition organizers feature additional insights and materials from former displaced persons and encourage the recording of these experiences through a physical and on-line survey. These responses and additional materials can be reached at the following website: www.balzekasmuseum.org
„No Home To Go To” is a traveling exhibition organized by the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture in Chicago, Illinois. The exhibition was developed in collaboration with the Chicago Estonian House, the Latvian Folk Art Museum, and the Lithuanian Emigration Institute of Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Lithuania.

IL – Solo & Indrė concert

September 22, 2016, 6:00 PM

Thursday, September 22 at 6 pm you are invited to zither virtuoso and vocalist Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė duet with Senegalese kora player Solo Cissokho. The event will be held at Chicago Cultural Center, Preston Bradley Hall (78 E. Washington St., Chicago).

More about the festival:

The 18th Annual World Music Festival Chicago will take place Friday, September 9 – Sunday, September 25, 2016 and is presented by the City of Chicago and produced by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events. This city-wide, multi-venue, eleven-day festival has attracted over 650,000 concertgoers and has presented more than 650 artists and ensembles from over 80 countries since it began in 1999.

Solo & Indrė

Senegalese kora player Solo Cissokho has made a name for himself bridging cultures. He’s lived in Norway since the mid-90’s and he’s built a career through unexpected collaboration, including projects with the great Indian classical violinst L. Subramaniam and Norwegian folk singer Kirsten Braten Berg. In 2003 he played World Music Festival: Chicago in a duo with the Swedish fiddler Ellika Frisell. At the time the Chicago Reader’s Peter Margasak wrote of the pairing, “it’s one of the most compelling examples of cross-cultural collaboration I’ve heard in some time. On African-derived pieces Cissokho’s spindly kora licks cascade beautifully over Frisell’s stuttering pulse, while on Swedish polskas and waltzes he returns the favor, supporting her lyrical solos and interjecting deft, punchy asides. Cissokho also sings on many of the pieces, with the deep soul of a West African griot.” He’s back this year with an arresting new partnership: the Lithuanian musician Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė, a virtuoso of the kanklés, a plucked, trapezoidal-shaped zither indigenous to her homeland and related to other chordophones from Finland, Russia, and Latvia. Despite the cultural and geographic distance of Senegal and Latvia, the pair finds stunning common ground on their beautiful debut album Solo & Indré (One Root Music), where the sweet-toned timbres of their respective instruments sparkle in tangles of contrapuntal arpeggios, with each cascading phrase forming surprisingly hypnotic and lovely harmonies with one another. As Songlines wrote last year, “The mix of Baltic and West African folk styles is an unlikely one, but the sound it creates is relaxing, thoughtful and oddly saddening, in the most beautiful way. When the strings play together, the styles mix beautifully with the different melodies and harmonies dancing around and between each other; it’s often hard to tell where one instrument ends and the other begins.”

NY – Ieva Mediodia exhibition

September 9, 2016, 6:00 PM

Ieva Mediodia
September 9-October 15, 2016
Emergent behavior
Paintings and Drawings

OPENING RECEPTION: SEPTEMBER 9 / FRIDAY, 6PM – 9PM
Curated by Annina Nosei

Gallery Hours:
Thursday – Saturday 11am – 6pm
Except: September 10 and October 8
Open By Appointment: 518 567 8193

Sla307 is pleased to present, Emergent Behavior, a solo exhibition of works by Ieva Mediodia (b. Lithuanian), an artist based in Hudson, NY.

This is Ieva Mediodia’s second solo exhibition in New York, which is curated by Annina Nosei. 12 years ago, Mediodia’s first New York solo show Biomorphic Automata was exhibited at Annina Nosei Gallery in Chelsea, where she was represented from 2003-2006. The gallery closed, but the relationship between the artist and prominent art dealer Annina Nosei continues to this day. Mediodia’s work is included in the private collection of Annina Nosei anninanoseigallery.com.

This exhibition features work created in recent years. The artist is using an expressionist language which involves analog/architectural and binary/digital-like structures breaking down within a luminescent contrasting color scale. “Over past recent years in my studio I’ve been immersed within reflection, wanting to unfold through painting the process of the ever changing reality of life existence-being born, giving birth and the presence of my growing daughter as well, contemplating the fragility of life pulsating in an aggressive environment of progressively artificial intelligence.

15 years ago I read about the discovery of neurogenesis. Since then, my work has developed into intricate compositions, similar to writing notes and making marks. I have envisioned a subliminal map in process – thoughts and feelings which pass through my mind in the form of electrochemical signaling between neuronal synapses are translated into outbursts of appropriate color and the development of macro-microcosmic structures. The intention is to make a connection in between my memories-emotional, bodily and mental experiences, and the matrix of the elusive, “external” physical reality-a map/a moving field, overlapping and breaking into fragments in space-time, which unfolds as a portrait of my internal mentation.

In the process of painting, composition emerges organically-a mark on a blank surface-random spill of paint. My choice-fluid acrylics and ink using paintbrush, pen and airbrush techniques. I introduce contrasting languages-organic and mechanical: the pools of paint forming into random shapes are overlaid with gestures of paintbrush and pen and gestures using machine-airbrush”. Ieva Mediodia
Bio: In 2001 Ieva Mediodia received her MFA in Painting at Hunter College, NY. Mediodia’s installations, drawings and paintings have been exhibited internationally-biennials and triennials in Vilnius CAC in Lithuania and Iasi (Romania), group shows in Italy-as Scuderie Aldobrandini Museum in Frascati (Italy), Rome, Bolognia, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Hudson, NY and solo exhibitions in Vilnius, New York, Paris, Pesaro (Italy) and Hudson, NY.

Ieva’s works reside in private art collections – Vilnius, New York, Miami, Paris, Rome, Milan, London.

Her work has been noted in Flash Art, The New York Times, Art Forum, L.A. Weekly, Times Union, Albany and art catalogs in Italy and Lithuania ievamediodia.com.

SLA307 is a non-profit artist run organization and art space in New York City.
