Huge sculpture in celebration of the centennial of modern Lithuania

On Wednesday, May 23, morning commuters in Union Station, in Washington DC, might notice that the Station’s Main Hall looks different. Travelers and tourists will be greeted by internationally acclaimed Lithuanian American artist Ray Bartkus’ “Gardens” installation, a 17’ x 17’ x 17’ LED and aluminum mobile sculpture.

“Gardens” is inspired by Lithuanian folk art ornaments called “Sodai” — strands of straw woven into complex 3D polygons. Ray Bartkus has reimagined these traditional ornaments through a contemporary magnifying lens, using modern materials and technology, now shaping LED and aluminum instead of straw, into a slowly rotating, giant geometric kaleidoscope.

Part of the annual Writers Block Festival of Staged Readings and Performances to Benefit the Actors Fund

Howl! Happening is pleased to present When Lithuania Ruled the World—a play cycle in four parts by Kestutis Nakas. Featuring a cast of East Village performance veterans including John Kelly and Edgar Oliver, this is the first time the play cycle has been presented in its entirety. The event marks the centennial year of independence for modern Lithuania. When Lithuania Ruled the World traces the rise of the medieval Lithuanian Empire, invoking the myths, legends, and worldview of Europe’s last pagans. By turns tragic, comic, ridiculous, romantic, and grotesque, the play tells story of a dynasty that forged a tolerant, polyglot, multicultural empire while resisting conquest and forced Christianization by crusading Teutonic knights.

Written in Nakas’ trademark “iambic funtameter” style, this sprawling work was first presented in New York’s East Village at the Pyramid Club, La MaMa, and Anthology Film Archives in the 80s and early 90s.

DC – Baltic Centennial Midsummer

June 23, Saturday, 11:00 AM

The Embassies of the three Baltic countries invite everyone to Dupont Circle on Saturday, June 23 at 11 am to join in celebrating Midsummer, one of the most awaited holidays of the year. Midsummer marks the longest day and the shortest night of the year, signifying the sun’s victory against night and darkness. The Midsummer celebration, which predates the arrival of Christianity in the Baltic region, is known as Joninės in Lithuania, as Jāņi in Latvia and as Jaanipäev in Estonia. The strong and enduring pagan connection to nature has influenced both ancient beliefs and the modern cultures of the Baltic people.

It has been 85 years since one of the most daring and historic flights of aviation history occurred on July 15, 1933. Lithuanian American pilots, Steponas Darius and Stasys Girenas, not only carried America’s first trans-Atlantic mail, but also recorded the most accurate flight without the use of navigational equipment at that time.

This Sunday, July 15, we celebrate and commemorate this historic event at the Darius and Girenas Memorial in Marquette Park at 10 am. Following ceremonies at the Memorial, there will be 11 am Mass at the Nativity BVM Church. The festivities after Mass will continue at the parish hall with dinner and entertainment provided by Lithuanian American Theater, “VILTIS.”

Would be nice to see all of our friends there.
