In honor of the centenary of the restoration of Lithuanian statehood and the application of Kaunas Modernism Architecture to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018, an exhibition was organized, accompanied by the book “Optimistic Architecture: Kaunas Phenomenon, 1918-1940” (compiled by Marija Drėmaitė, curators of the exhibition: Marija Drėmaitė, Giedrė Jankevičiūtė, Vaidas Petrulis). In 1919, when Kaunas suddenly became the interim capital of the Republic of Lithuania, the city transformation was miraculous. Kaunas radically changed its identity: in less than 20 years the inhabitants built more than 12,000 new buildings and made Kaunas a modern, elegant, European capital. After the Second World War and Soviet occupation, the heritage of the interwar Kaunas modernist architecture played an important role: it became a memory of former statehood, a symbolic window to the West and an example for Lithuanian architects. To this day, this heritage of Kaunas is an important source of identity and the expression of the city genius loci. In the lecture Maria Dremaitė will speak about the architectural phenomenon of Kaunas in the interwar period, about the constantly reborn and fading hopes, about creative efforts and optimism, about the migration, the localities and the commonality of ideas and forms.
Dr. Maria Dremaitė is an architectural historian, Associate Professor at the Faculty of History of Vilnius University, and the author of books about the architecture of the 20th century.
